Jaw pain, clicking, and difficulty chewing are not conditions most people associate with a chiropractor. But the temporomandibular joint, commonly called the TMJ, has a direct relationship with the cervical spine and the surrounding musculature, and chiropractic care can play a meaningful role in relieving the pain and dysfunction associated with TMJ disorders.

Dr. Frank Stiso at Stiso Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Massage Therapy in Manasquan, NJ takes a whole-body approach to TMJ dysfunction that addresses both the joint itself and the spinal and muscular factors that frequently contribute to it.

What Is the TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is the hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull on each side of your face. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, responsible for the movements involved in talking, chewing, yawning, and swallowing. When this joint is functioning properly it moves smoothly and without pain. When it is not, the result can be a wide range of uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating symptoms.

What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ dysfunction can develop from a variety of causes including:

  • Jaw injury or trauma

  • Teeth grinding or clenching, known as bruxism

  • Arthritis in the temporomandibular joint

  • Myofascial pain and muscle tension in the jaw and neck

  • Bite misalignment

  • Stress and emotional tension that manifests as jaw clenching

  • Cervical spine misalignment that affects the surrounding musculature and nerve function

In many cases TMJ dysfunction has more than one contributing factor, and the relationship between the jaw and the cervical spine means that neck problems can directly influence TMJ symptoms and vice versa.

Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction

Jaw pain or soreness, particularly in the morning Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth Difficulty fully opening the mouth or a locked jaw Pain while chewing or speaking Headaches, particularly at the temples Earaches or a sensation of fullness in the ears Neck and shoulder tension Facial pain or fatigue

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Dr. Stiso approaches TMJ dysfunction by looking at the full picture rather than treating the jaw in isolation. The cervical spine and the TMJ are closely related anatomically and biomechanically. Misalignment in the upper cervical spine can affect the muscles and nerves that influence jaw function, and conversely, chronic jaw tension can contribute to neck pain and headaches.

Chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine help restore proper alignment and reduce the muscular tension that often drives or perpetuates TMJ symptoms. In appropriate cases gentle mobilization of the jaw joint itself may also be incorporated into treatment. Dr. Stiso will evaluate both the jaw and the neck to determine which factors are most significant in your specific case and develop a treatment plan accordingly.

For patients whose TMJ dysfunction has a significant muscular component, massage therapy is a valuable complement to chiropractic care and is available at our practice. Acupuncture is also well documented for TMJ pain relief and may be recommended as part of a comprehensive approach.

Why Choose Dr. Stiso for TMJ Dysfunction

TMJ dysfunction is one of those conditions that falls between disciplines and is frequently undertreated as a result. Dentists address the bite and the joint. Chiropractors address the spine and surrounding musculature.

Dr. Stiso understands how these elements interact and takes a comprehensive approach that addresses the full mechanical picture. If your case requires co-management with a dentist or oral specialist, he will let you know and coordinate accordingly.
