A Natural, Non-Surgical Approach to Healthier, More Radiant Skin

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, or also known as cosmetic acupuncture or an “acu facelift,” is a non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation that uses very fine acupuncture needles on specific points of the face and body.

Unlike a surgical facelift, facial acupuncture does not change the underlying structure of the face. Instead, the goal is to support a healthier, more refreshed appearance through gentle stimulation of the skin and underlying tissues.

How Does Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation Work?

During treatment, very fine acupuncture needles are carefully placed in selected areas of the face and, depending on the treatment plan, additional points on the body. From a modern physiological perspective, acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves and local tissues. This may influence local blood flow, tissue response, and muscle activity. In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is also viewed as a way to promote balance and healthy circulation of qi throughout the body.

Some facial acupuncture treatments may also incorporate gentle electrical stimulation to selected acupuncture points. The goal is a subtle, natural-looking improvement rather than a dramatic change in facial appearance.

What Can Facial Acupuncture Help With?

Depending on the individual, facial rejuvenation acupuncture may help improve the appearance of:

·         Fine lines and wrinkles

·         Frown lines between the eyebrows

·         Uneven or dull-looking skin

·         Mild loss of facial tone

·         Mild facial laxity

·         Puffiness

Results vary from person to person, and facial acupuncture is not intended to replace surgical procedures, Botox, dermal fillers, or other medical cosmetic treatments.

What Does the Research Say?

Research specifically examining cosmetic acupuncture is still limited, but the evidence is becoming more encouraging.

A 2025 study, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, evaluated facial and body acupuncture for frown lines in 72 women between the ages of 30 and 59. Participants received acupuncture twice a week for six weeks. At the end of treatment, approximately 63% of participants showed improvement in frown lines at rest, while 72% showed improvement during maximum frowning. Some of the improvement was still present at the 12-week follow-up. The researchers reported no serious adverse effects.

The study also included standardized before-and-after photographs of an actual participant. In one example, the Global Line Scale score for two frown lines improved from 2.5 before treatment to 0.5 at follow-up. Participants had provided consent for publication of their photographs.

Earlier research has also produced encouraging findings. A 2013 pilot study involving women between 40 and 59 found measurable improvements in facial elasticity following a series of facial cosmetic acupuncture treatments, although the researchers emphasized that larger and better-controlled studies were needed.

Overall, the research suggests that facial acupuncture may have potential as a minimally invasive approach to facial rejuvenation, particularly for fine lines and facial skin appearance. However, more large-scale, high-quality research is needed before definitive conclusions can be made.

What Should You Expect During Treatment?

Cosmetic acupuncture typically involves the placement of very fine needles in selected facial and body acupuncture points. The needles are generally much thinner than those used for injections.

A treatment session may last approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on the individual treatment plan. A series of treatments is generally recommended rather than expecting a significant change from a single session. The number and frequency of treatments will depend on your goals, skin condition, age, and individual response. Many patients choose to continue with periodic maintenance treatments after completing their initial series.

Is Facial Acupuncture Right for You?

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture may be an option for people who are looking for a natural, non-surgical approach to improving the appearance of their skin without significantly changing their facial features.

The objective is not to make you look like a different person. Rather, the goal is to help you look refreshed, healthy, and naturally rejuvenated.
