In Honor of the Life and Legacy of Dr. Frank A. Stiso

The Stiso Chiropractic Centers mourn the passing of one of the most influential leaders in the history of chiropractic in New Jersey, Dr. Frank A. Stiso, DC, FICC, CCSP. A distinguished clinician, visionary leader, educator, mentor, and tireless advocate, Dr. Stiso devoted more than six decades to advancing the chiropractic profession and improving the lives of countless patients.

Dr. Stiso's journey into chiropractic began in 1959 after suffering a football injury during his senior year of high school. After being told by his family physician that his season was over, his father took him to a local chiropractor. Within days, he returned to the football field. That life-changing experience inspired him to pursue chiropractic, beginning a career that would ultimately transform the profession in New Jersey.

Graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1964, Dr. Stiso established his practice in Colonia, New Jersey, where he cared for generations of families with exceptional skill, compassion, and integrity. Throughout a career spanning more than sixty years, he continuously expanded his expertise in sports injuries, disability evaluation, forensic examination, insurance consulting, diagnostic imaging, and patient care, while remaining steadfast in his belief that chiropractic offered patients a natural path toward health and healing.

While his clinical accomplishments were extraordinary, Dr. Stiso's greatest legacy was his leadership. Serving as President of the New Jersey Chiropractic Society, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Insurance Relations Committee, and later as New Jersey's representative to the American Chiropractic Association House of Delegates, Dr. Stiso became one of the profession's most respected voices on legislative, regulatory, and insurance issues.

He dedicated countless hours to protecting the rights of chiropractors and expanding access to chiropractic care throughout New Jersey and across the nation. Among his most enduring contributions was his leadership in helping establish the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners as an independent licensing authority.

When Dr. Stiso entered the profession in 1964, chiropractors in New Jersey were licensed under the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, as no independent chiropractic licensing board yet existed. He took the same state physiology examinations administered to candidates for medical licensure, sitting alongside future medical doctors during the licensing process.

His original chiropractic license proudly bears the seal of the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners, a reminder of an era when chiropractic had not yet achieved regulatory independence.

Dr. Stiso recognized that the chiropractic profession deserved the autonomy to regulate itself through its own board of knowledgeable peers. Through determined leadership, tireless advocacy, and years of service, he became a driving force behind the creation of the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. That achievement forever strengthened the profession's identity, elevated its standing, and established a legacy that continues to benefit every chiropractor licensed in New Jersey today.

Dr. Stiso was equally passionate about educating his colleagues. As Chairman of the Insurance Relations Committee, he authored dozens of articles on insurance law, Medicare, workers' compensation, documentation, coding, and practice management, while presenting seminars throughout the state that helped countless chiropractors successfully navigate an increasingly complex healthcare system. Many New Jersey chiropractors built stronger practices because of his willingness to teach, mentor, and share his knowledge.

The respect Dr. Stiso earned from his peers is reflected in the extraordinary recognition he received throughout his career. He was honored with 26 major professional awards and recognitions, including Chiropractor of the Year, multiple Distinguished Service Awards, the Louis A. Kovacs Memorial Award, two American Chiropractic Association Delegate of the Year Awards, the ANJC Special Services Award, and the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors Lifetime Achievement Award.

These honors represent not only a remarkable career, but also the profound gratitude of a profession that repeatedly recognized his selfless service and unwavering commitment.

Yet those who knew Frank best will remember him not for the titles he held or the awards he received, but for his generosity, humility, and willingness to help others. Whether mentoring a young chiropractor, answering a colleague's insurance question, advocating before legislators, or caring for a patient, he led with integrity, wisdom, and an unwavering belief that the profession was strongest when chiropractors stood together.

His greatest legacy may well be the generations he inspired. What began with one young man whose football injury introduced him to chiropractic grew into a family tradition of seven chiropractors dedicated to serving others. His influence extends far beyond his own practice through the thousands of patients he treated, the doctors he mentored, and the profession he helped shape.

Dr. Frank A. Stiso leaves behind a legacy that is woven into the very fabric of chiropractic in New Jersey. The profession enjoys greater recognition, stronger representation, and enhanced independence because of his vision and perseverance.

The Association of New Jersey Chiropractors extends its deepest condolences to the Stiso family, his friends, former patients, and the countless chiropractors whose lives and careers were touched by his leadership.

His life's work reminds us that true leadership is measured not by titles or accolades, but by the lasting impact one leaves on others. Dr. Frank A.
