If you have ever been told you have a herniated disc, you know how alarming those words can sound. Images of surgery, chronic pain, and a life spent avoiding certain movements probably came to mind. The good news is that most disc herniations respond well to conservative treatment and many patients find significant relief through chiropractic care without ever needing surgery.
What exactly is a disc herniation?
Think of the discs in your spine like jelly donuts sitting between each vertebra. The outer layer is tough and fibrous. The inner layer is soft and gel-like. A herniation happens when that outer layer weakens or tears and the soft inner material pushes outward. When that displaced material presses against a nearby nerve the result is the sharp pain, radiating symptoms, and numbness that most disc herniation patients know all too well.
Disc herniations most commonly occur in the lower back, which is why so many patients experience pain that travels down the leg. They can also occur in the neck, producing symptoms that radiate into the shoulder, arm, or hand.

What does a chiropractor actually do for a herniated disc?
Chiropractic care addresses disc herniations by restoring proper alignment and movement to the affected spinal segments, reducing pressure on the nerve, and allowing the surrounding muscles and tissues to recover. Research consistently ranks spinal manipulation among the most effective conservative treatments available for lumbar disc herniation.
Not every technique is appropriate for every patient. Some people do well with traditional manual adjustments. Others benefit more from gentler low force options like the Activator Method or drop table technique. A good chiropractor evaluates each case individually and chooses the approach that fits the patient rather than applying the same technique to everyone.
When should you see a chiropractor?
Sooner rather than later is almost always the answer. The longer a disc herniation goes unaddressed the more the surrounding muscles compensate, the more the nerve becomes irritated, and the harder the recovery tends to be. If you are dealing with back or neck pain that radiates into your arms or legs, numbness or tingling in your extremities, or pain that has not improved with rest, it is worth getting evaluated.
If chiropractic is not the right fit for your specific situation a good chiropractor will tell you that and point you toward the appropriate next step. Surgery is rarely the first answer and for most patients it should not be.
