HEALTH & WELLNESS: Exercising Safely in Cooler Weather

Cooler temperatures make fall a great time to walk, hike, and enjoy outdoor activities. But your body responds differently to exercise in cold weather, and a few lesser-known precautions can help you avoid injury.

1. Warm Up Longer Than You Think You Need To

Cold muscles may feel stiffer, and jumping straight into strenuous activity can increase the risk of a strain. Start with 5–10 minutes of easy walking, followed by gentle movements of your shoulders, hips, and ankles. Gradually increase your pace before beginning a more demanding workout.

2. Don't Forget to Hydrate!

When it's hot outside, most people remember to drink water. In colder weather, thirst may be less noticeable, even while you're losing fluids through sweat and breathing. Drink water before and after exercising, and bring some along for longer outings. Don't wait until you feel thirsty.

3. Cold Weather Makes Your Heart Work Harder

Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to narrow, which can raise blood pressure and increase the workload on your heart. Avoid suddenly jumping into strenuous exercise or heavy yard work, especially if you have heart disease or high blood pressure. Follow your healthcare provider's guidance about exercising in the cold.

4. Dress for the Activity, Not Just the Temperature

Wear layers that allow moisture to escape. Sweat trapped against your skin can make you colder when you slow down. A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer, and a wind-resistant outer layer can help you stay comfortable.

5. Watch for Hidden Hazards

Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice and may conceal uneven ground, roots, and holes. Wear shoes with good traction, watch where you step, and avoid twisting your back repeatedly while raking leaves. Take breaks before fatigue affects your balance or lifting technique.

Remember: Persistent back or neck pain is not something you should simply push through. An appropriate evaluation can help determine the cause and guide treatment.
